gone centuries in a more eloquent männer by means os their sculptures than by a
mere description. But if in general single figures only have been telected, it has
been beseau the Artist has represented them as such, or in larger compositions has
expended his skill only on the principal figures, while the subordinate ones are but
of little merit and in some instances impair the beauty of the whole. Figures of the
same character have also always been represented together, both for their better com-
parison, and also to show in how manifold a männer the ideas of the old masters and
the execution of them appears. On this account the first part of the present work gi-
ves the statues of the Virgin, a second will give those of Christ, and a third those
of the Apostles, Saints and also Portrait statues. Should the Author succeed in gathe-
ring from the rieh garden of German Art some ssowers till now but little known,
and in making them accessible to the universal contemplation both of Artist and Ama-
teur, he will be proud of it and also at the same time in having contributed though
in ever so small a way to the better understanding and estimation of this glorious
subject.
