VIGNETTE.
Anton Kress, Bronze Casting in the Church of St. Lau-
rence, hy Peter Vischer*
Against the second pillar on the south side of the church, opposite the high Altar, is erec-
ted the monument to Anton Kress, warden of the church, who died in 1513. It occcupiöes a
niche 5 feet by 2V2, surrounded with Ornaments in the Italian Style; and though these, especially
the two Angels, are of inferior merit, still the whole may be received as a work of Vis eher’s, as
its style and treatment correspond with the fine Castings on St Sebald’s tomb by that artist.
PLATE I.
The Emperor Charles IV. by Schonhofer.
The artist himself has marked this Statue of Charles as one of the principal figures on the
Beautiful Fountain, (Schöne Brunnen) having affixed to it his own name, and the date 1361. The
other date 1825 refers to the restoration of the Fountain. The Emperor Charles, whose son
Wenceslaus was born the same year in the castle of Nuremberg, was also sounder of the Frauen-
kirche (Church of our Lady), and in every respect a great benefactor to the town, and to our
artist, whose good taste has sought to render his patron conspicuous, from the richness of the
costume in which he ha« represented him.
Unfortunately we do not possess a single notice on Schon hover’s life, but the more plainly
do his works teil of his skill.
