In. this purfuit he had a perlon to read to him ; and Mr. Thomas
Ellwood, afterwards an eminent writer among the quakers, attended
him for this purpofe. In 1665 he retired from the plague to a fmall
houfe in St. Giles’s Chalfont, in Buckinghamlhire : and there Mr.
Ellwood vifiting him, had “ Paradife, Loh” put into his hands. “ Pa-
radife Loll” was publilhed in 1667. In 1670 “ Paradife Regained,” a
poem, in four books j to which was added “ Sampfon Agoniftes, a dra-
matic poem.”
In .1669 he publilhed his “ Hiftory of Britain,” which the licenfers of
the prefs altered, by rejecting feveral pallages5 but thefe have been lince
reftored. In 1672, came out his i( Artis logicae plenior inftitutio ad Rami
“ methodum concinnata.” His s‘ Accidence commenced grammar,” he
had publilhed in- 1661. Thefe dry and humble Subjects were not
confidered by him as unworthy of his great and exalted genius. He
publilhed a defence of univerfal toleration for all fedtaries except papifts,
in a difcourfe, intituled, i( Of true religion, hereby, fchifm, toleration^
S( and what bed means may.be ufed againft the growth of popery.”
In 1674 he publilhed (< Epiftolarum familiarum liberi, & proluliones
s‘ quaedam oratorio in Collegio Chrifti habitae and “ A declaration
0 of the Poles concerning the election of their king John III.” tranllated
by him from the Dutch.
He died of the gout in the beginning of November, 1674, and lies
buried near his father, in the chancel of St. Giles’s, Cripplegate. He left
fome pieces in manufcript; among the reft, “ The brief hiftory of
“ Mufcovy,” &c. printed in 1682. His “ Hiftorical, political-, and
mifcellaneous works,” 1698. He was poflefted of ^1500, belides his
houfehold goods, at the time of his death. He had three daughters, who
furvived him ; the two younger of which ufed to read to him ; they read to
him in eight languages with readinefs and accuracy, though they un-
derlined nothing but Englilh.
The picture, whence this print was taken, was found by the late
Mr. Bonus, the picture-cleaner, on a ftall, and was purchafed by him
