APPENDIX

ALTHOUGH, as stated in the preliminary notice, it is nowise the intention of the present volume either
to attempt the history or a complete illustration of the art of the white Athenian lekythi, yet the addition
of a few sketches of examples of paintings, other than those represented in the plates, may be serviceable
to readers not having a special knowledge of the subject. It will be recognised at a glance that the sketches
are from paintings of all periods, from the archaic—as in the picture of the Exhibition of the Dead, Fig. 4,
which is from a tile in the Louvre—from the art of the best period, and from that of the decadence.

While the vases are still being discovered in Greece, it would perhaps be premature to undertake a work
having pretensions to be a final exposition of the subject, it might, however, be useful to students, and would
certainly be popular with all interested in art generally, for the various Museums possessing examples of the
lekythi, to publish at least outlines of the pictures. We are glad to know that such a work is now being
prepared by the Keeper of the Greek vases at the British Museum, and we trust his example will be followed
by those entrusted with the care of similar collections in the other national Museums.
