THE INDUSTRY OF ALL NATIONS.

Messrs. Lithgow & Purdie, of Edinburgh,
exhibit the very chaste and beautiful design for

^MAWAMUIA^^^MU^M^JM

A carved Mantel-Piece, by M. Conte, of
London, deserves to be highly commended for its
chaste style of ornament. M. Conte is an Italian

artist, who has long resided in London, where, in
his atelier, we have seen very many most elegant
works in marble, especially some statuettes!*

the Panelling of a saloon, indicative of " The
Seasons." The style is Italian, of the best order.

The Sideboard by Messrs. Hindley, of Lon-
don, is in the later Gothic style, and is pecu-
liarly appropriate for one of those mansions in

which that form of decoration predominates.
For a work of this kind, however, the style
presents peculiar excellencies, as it has a singu-

larly solid character, and is capable of the boldest
relief of light and shade. Floral decoration, in

conjunction with geometric form, has advantages
which may be of great value to the designer.
