Evidently the central part of a fmall triptych. In three compart-
ments, the upper one forming a trefoiled panel, beneath which Chrift,
as the Eternal Judge, is feated, fhowing His wounded hands and
fide between two kneeling angels, who bear the inftruments of the
Paffion. In the centre compartment the Crucifixion, the figures in
complete relief; at the fides of the crofs ftand the Virgin and St. John
and in two lateral divifions two ftanding figures, evidently intended for
the owners of the object, with hands raifed in prayer. Below, the
Virgin crowned, feated, holding the Holy Child in her left arm and an
apple in her right hand. At the fides, under trefoiled niches, ftand
SS. Peter, holding an enormous key, and Paul holding a fword. An
admirable piece of work, deeply undercut. (393.)

The Harrowing of Hell, within a quatrefoil compartment, with
projecting angles at the junction of the four leaves. 1 he Saviour, a
tall figure without nimbus, holding a long flender crofs in His right
hand, draws a naked male and female out of the flames of hell, the
open, toothed mouth of which appears above their heads, whilft a demon
turns his face from the Saviour. (394.)
