dral A Byzantine ivory carving on the cover of a copy of the gofpels
preferved in the facrifty. A half-length figure of the Virgin and Child,
furrounded by chafed filver-gilt plates reprefenting the Birth, Death,
Refurre&ion, and Afcenfion of Chrift. On the back of the cover is
another Byzantine ivory carving containing the bufts of four faints ; fur-
rounded with chafings of the four Evangelifts feated and writing.

each fide of the Crofs, the fcabellum refting on a large chalice, the four
evangelical fymbols at the angles. 2. The Baptifm of Chrift, the head
of the dove defcending from a cloud upon the head of the Saviour, four
angels at the fides holding the clothes of Chrift. 3. The birth of
Chrift, the Virgin lying in the middle ; the Child in an ornamented crib
over the bed, with the heads of the ox and afs ; Jofeph and an angel to
the right, and another angel appearing to the Shepherds to the left;
figures very fhort.
