A Work has lately been given to the public, which,
whether we conhder the judicious feledtion and fkilful
arrangement of fadts ; the proofs brought forward to
atteft them ; the fagacity difplayed in tracing their rela-
tions and dependencies; the fevere logic with which all
the inferences are deduced; or the manly eloquence
with which they are urged; deferves the praife and the
gratitude, not of Britons only, but of every friend to
truth, to juftice, and to mankind. This mafierly per-
formance is the Hilfory of the Politicks of Great Britain
and France, written in German and Englifh by my
learned and excellent friend Mr. Herbert Marfh \ Of
the Englifh publication he thus obferves : “ The work
“ now prefented to the Britifh public may, in one fenfe,
“ be called a tranflation, as it was originally written in
“ German: but as it proceeds from the author himfelf, it
“ has an equal claim to the title of an original. In fact
“ it contains not a literal tranflation, but only the fame
“ narrative drawn up in another language, and fup-
“ ported by the fame documents. In various places
“ new matter has been added, and feveral alterations
“ have been made in the arrangement of the materials.

i It is with great pleafure that I can announce to the lovers of theolo-
gical learning, that the laborious and able tranflator of Michaelis has com-
pleted the work, from the firft part of which he has derived the mod:
merited fame. The concluding volumes are now in the prefs, and will,
I doubt not, amply fatisfy the expectations of the Biblical fcholar.
