Walls and towers. Construction: the large rectangular stones are of light
bluish-grey opaque glass tessellae, in the illuminated parts of the colour
of Proconnesus marble, in the shadows of darker hue, but all clear. The
vertical and horizontal masonry joints are of whitish stone tessellae in
the light, and of gold and silver tessellae turned on all sides in the
shadows. Vertical stripes separating the towers from the walls are of
the same colour. The battlements of the nearer walls are outlined with
gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces, while the internal side of
the farther walls and the four towers are outlined with dark blue on
top, and our left side of each battlement is drawn with gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces. The blue outline of the farther walls is
flanked with a line of gold tessellae set vertically and their embrasures
are filled with gold tessellae set at an angle.
Gates: the two valves of the gates are of gold tessellae; they are separated
by a double vertical stripe of gold and silver tessellae turned on all
faces. The large cross of four limbs on each valve is of red tessellae; the
jewelled ends of the base of the cross are red. Above each cross are
grouped four red tessellae in an irregular rectangular form, the group
on the right valve being the larger. At the bottom of the right valve
are two horizontal rows, each of four red tessellae. Rising from the
centre of these, three red tessellae set vertically reach a horizontal line
of gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces. A similar red vertical
line was once suggested on the left panel of the gates, but the cube above
Constantine’s right hand, corresponding to the topmost of the three
red tessellae on the right panel, has fallen from its place. Above the
double doors of the City Gates runs a cornice indicated by a transverse
line of whitish stone tessellae, enclosed between two parallel rows of
gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces, which stretches between the
two flanking towers. In the right-hand lower corner of the cornice
four greyish-blue tessellae form a shadow, which should continue the
whole extent of the cornice toward the left, but the hne of the shadow
was never completed with mosaics, and it consists to-day of partially
painted plaster.
Basilica on the left: The lightest front is of tessellae of whitish stone and
greyish-blue glass. The central entrance is recessed and is outlined
with gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces. The long, shadowy
side of the Basilica is of light blue tessellae. It is pierced by two narrow
windows, each represented by a vertical line of gold and silver tessellae
turned on all faces. Its farther vertical outhne is a row of gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces, and a line of dark blue divides the side from
the roof above. The pediment is outlined with dark blue tessellae and
is filled with whitish tessellae, in the centre of which is a single greyish-
blue tessella. The roof outline is blue. The roof is divided into four
panels by two intersecting blue lines; these spaces are filled with gold
