roof.
Basilica on the right: The facade of whitish stone tessellae and greyish-
blue tessellae similar to those of the other buildings is pierced by two
high, narrow windows, each of wliich is represented by a single row
of gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces and is framed by deep
blue tessellae. The base of the pediment consists of a horizontal line of
gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces; its sides are blue, while the
pediment itself has a face of whitish stone tessellae. The cornice of the
pediment is indicated on its right side by a short hne of gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces. In the centre of the pediment are several
bluish-grey tessellae. The roof is outlined in blue, as with the other
Basilica.
The buildings within the walls are represented in the same manner as
the structures adjoining the Church in the hands of Justinian.

Background:-Gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces together with
irregular rows of blue tessellae are used to represent the background
of the model of the City. Blue tessellae also outline the upper and
right sides of the battlements of the fourth main tower of the City
and the adjoining walls. The gold ground of the panel appears like
the sky between the crenellations in the distant walls.

Dome: the outline of roof on the East and below, single row of dark
blue opaque glass tessellae; on the West, a row of gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces and broken only by lines to mark the leaves
of the leaden covering. The leaves and their ribs are dark blue opaque
glass tessellae, the lead of the leaves being effected by gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces, and each leaf outlined on Eastern side and
below by line of greyish-blue; the lower part of dome is given in pale
blue opaque glass tessellae to produce pendulous effect.
Walls of dome: shaded on East side by two rows of gold and silver
tessellae turned on all faces; stone mulhons of dome-drum windows,
whitish-grey stone tessellae; glass of windows, gold and silver tessellae
turned on all faces to catch the transmitted light.
Walls: general tint, greyish-blue; the lights are worked in glass tessellae
ranging from yellow-green to greyish-blue, the shadows in gold and
silver tessellae turned on all faces.
Cross above dome: height, 0-112 m.; width, 0-081 m.; enclosing circle,
single row of red opaque tessellae outlined without by single row of
gold tessellae set vertically; ground of circle, gold tessellae set at
inclined angle; limbs of cross, two rows of whitish stone tessellae.
Southern recess: roof as other roofs; wall beneath roof, pale blue; curved
line of recess, white stone tessellae shaded by line of dark blue glass
tessellae; stone work of recess, in three divisions, reddish-brown opaque
glass tessellae, the partitions separated from one another by two vertical
lines, each consisting of one row of whitish stone tessellae and one row
of gold and silver tessellae turned on all faces; windows of South side,
treated similarly to windows of dome; lower line of South side, two
rows of gold and silver tessellae set on all faces above one row of whitish
