THOMAS WHITTEMORE

died on 8 June 1950, in Washington, in his eightieth
year. Founder and Director of the Byzantine Institute,
Thomas Whittemore devoted his energies to uncover-
ing and consolidating masterpieces of Byzantine mosaic
painting. He established the Paris Library of the Institute
and provided for the publication of a dozen volumes
bearing the Institute’s imprint.

Thomas Whittemore’s work is being continued.
