to commence with the heads os all the animals, getting them in their
proper distance srom each other, sorming a very light sketch os the
group besore a determined outline is made in any part os the drawing.
It may seem tedious to the learner to be told this so repeatedly, but
it is os so much importance in every kind os drawing, by insuring
correctness and sreedom, that it cannot be too sirmly sixed in the
mind. Those who have had an opportunity os seeing the engravings
made srom the sketches of the great masters in the art of painting,
will be aware what a number os sketchy outlines they made besore
they determined on that which they meant to act upon, and that it
was to the care they took in this early stage os their pictures, that
much os their beauty is to be attributed in the finished state.
In drawing the outline observe the copy, which will be sound very
light and broken. The hair os the puppies projects a long way from
the body, and yet the sorm must be kept correctly. Be particularly
caresul in getting the expression of the features; taking care that
they are properly disposed, according to the rule laid down in the last
lesson. This done, if the subject is to be finished in pencil, make a
light tint over every part in shade, letting it be worked very light
and thin as it approaches the light; this will produce roundness, and
make the light parts project. Aster the second shade is added, the
darkest and most spirited touches may be given with a sost black-
lead pencil. The animals will now be in proper light and shade, and
will only require to be sinished by passing curved lines, sor the hair,
over every part os the body, beginning at the neck, letting them
