594 ON THE COMMUNICATION

steam communication with India, where ail the most minute
and satisfactory details will be found that can be desired
upon this important subject, and I am glad to find that his
views coincide so nearly with my osvn.

With regard to the route by Kossayr, I must observe,
1st, That the time of 8 days, employed from Coptos to
Bool£q (a distance of 638 miles), would be reduced to less
than half by employing a river steam-boat, and that con-
sequently, reckoning even four days* from Coptos to BooKq,
the total from Bombay to Alexandria would only be 30J
days. 2nd, That the additional delay of 2J days in the
route by Kossayr is by no means an objection equal to the
risks and chances of far greater delay in the upper part of
the Gulf of Sooez. 3rd, That it would be more worth
while to employ a steam-boat on the river for the greater
distance from Coptos, than merely from Booldq to the
Mediterranean. 4th, That if that part of the route from
the Mediterranean to BooKq was performed in the country
boats, it would frequently occupy against the stream, and
with bad wind, as much or more time than from the sea to
Coptos by the river steam-boat; and 5th, That the number
of days from Booldq to the Mediterranean being also
reduced from 3 days to 1 or 1J, the total from Bombay to
the Mediterranean at Rashe"ed will only be(19|-f4 + 4-f
1J=)28|, or 29 days; or from Bombay to England
(24 + 29 =) 52|, or 53 days, by way of Kossayr.

But whichever route is taken, it will be necessary to
arrange all matters in the most explicit manner, respecting
duties, port dues, purchase of corn-\ and provisions, the
right of hiring camels, the steamer on the river, magazines

* That is, from Boolaq to Coptos, but from Coptos to Boolaq less,
in consequence of the stream.

* It is not to be supposed that Mohammed Ali respects any
treaties or articles of convention in these matters.
