apprized Colonel Stuart of their intention.
It had been before privately agreed upon
that a detachment of the Captain Pacha’s
body-guard should enter the city with the
British ; but, as the 89th, under Colonel
Stuart, entered the citadel without waiting
.for the Turkish commandant, he was so
angry as to complain to the British general
that he had been treated with indignity ; and
then, leaving the head-quarters with some
warmth, he immediately passed over to Bou-
lac with his body-guard, and thence to the
citadel: fortunately, as the British flag had
not been hoisted, the difference was soon ac-
commodated by displaying the Turkish co-
lours at the top of the citadel, and hoisting
those of the British under them. It should
