The appearance of the allies, as they are
termed, the French, &c. at Rosetta, are de-
scribed as forming such a motley groupe, as
to afford a most curious spectacle. The
latter, being prisoners of war, they sold their
horses, their swords, and'even the black
women that had associated with them. But,
as the superstitious Mahometans look upon
every female as contaminated who has been
connected with a Christian, the sale of these
unfortunate people was very heavy indeed ;
and much grief and apprehension was ex-
pressed by them in parting with their un-
feeling companions, from the too certain pu-
nishment which they dreaded from the Turks,
for the preference they had shewn for Chris-
tians.
While the French were at Rosetta, it is
remarked, that the Arabs were never better
pleased than when they saw any of them
marched as prisoners by the English guard,
for disorderly behaviour, &c. but still this
measure was managed so as to render it as
little mortifying as possible.
General Hutchinson, who, on the 29th of
June, had received, at Cairo, His Majesty’s
letter, expressive of his high approbation of
his conduct, with the honour of being made
a Knight of the Bath, soon after arrived at
Rosetta, having secured supplies for the
Indian army, and left the Mamelukes strongly
impressed in his favour.
During General Hutchinson’s stay at Ro-
setta, he resided at the house of M. Rosetti,
