laid between them, both of very curious workmanship.
His suit was trimmed with scarlet taffeta ribbands ;
his stockings of white silk, upon long scarlet silk
ones ; his shoes black, with scarlet shoe-strings, and
garters. His linen very fine, laced with rich Flanders’
lace. A black beaver buttoned on the left side, with
a jewel of 1200/. value. A rich, upright, curious gold
chain, made at the Indies, at which hung the king
his master’s picture, richly set with diamonds, and cost
300/., which his majesty in his great grace and favour
had been pleased to give him on his coming from
Portugal. On his fingers he wore two rich rings.
His gloves were trimmed with the same ribbands as
his clothes, and his whole family were richly clothed,
according to their several qualities.”
During this reign a coat, approaching more than
that garment had hitherto done to the coats of the pre-
sent day, is frequently mentioned in Pepys’ “ Diary ; ”
and in an inventory of the apparel of the king is
named a complete suit of one material, also pantaloons,
Holland drawers, and cotton trousers. Stockings were
worn of leather, silk, woollen, linen, and worsted ; and
the rolls of silk or satin that ended the nether gar-
ments below the knee, and were called canons, were
still in use.
Patches and paint were now as much admired as
wigs, and the ladies never considered themselves bien
mises when not following this fashion, which con-
tinned in full force through this and the succeeding
reign.
Infatuated with the wish to have small, slender
waists, the women wore high stays, laced so tight that
they could scarcely breathe ; and nothing was con-
sidered reallv fashionable that did not come from
