A half ftoor was inserted, resting on octagonai oak piiiarsP items are rendered for
these supports and their foundations. The apparent object was to make a Royai Pew
on the level of the hrst fioor of the Paiace, approached from the Haunted Gaiiery.
It may be supposed that the eiaborate Altar-piece, executed for James II in the new
Chapei, which he had buiit at Whitehail for Roman Cathoiic services during his briei
reign, was removed to Hampton Court (see Pipe Roli no. 3) by Griniing Gibbons at a
contract price of VA30, with some idea of refixing it in this Chapel. (See p. 16.)

As a carver in wood the unique character of Gibbons' work is universaiiy known.
His work in stone and marbie, though it would appear to have been ceiebrated at
the time, has been questioned, and the foliowing new evidence wiil be very weicome,
especiaiiy as it is accompanied by a drawing and contract dated May 10, 1689.
Clifton-on-Teme is a viiiage on the high ground about eieven miles north-east of
Worcester. The Rev. R. G. Grifhths, F.S.A., vicar ofthe parish, kindiy drew my attention
