The following sketches make no pretenses of competing with the shaded pencil drawings
published in the CMS and are by no means the basis for my stylistic analysis. They are intend-
ed simply to remind the reader of the motif. The photos in Plates 37-41 supplement the chap-
ter on style-groups. In cases for which further study photos are required, the original places of
publication for my drawings are listed in chapter 3. For the sake of consistency, impressions and
not seals appear and the motifs are drawn in a uniform size. The materials are indicated by the
following signs:
no sign is soft and middle hard stone
• hard stone
