Accession register of the library of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum
Reporting period 1853 – 1944
The library of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, founded in 1852, is based on the private library of Hans von und zu Aufseß. The museum's founder owned a total of around 7,000 works, which he had arranged in a remarkably modern manner according to Numerus currens. The accession registers begin where the Aufseß library catalogue ends. They provide brief information about the acquired or donated ‘item’, its provenance and the inventory number assigned to it. A second set of numbers occasionally noted in the ‘Acquisition type’ column in the early accession registers indicates the old location of the bibliographic units. It was not until 1900 that the actual type of acquisition was indicated there. Another special feature of the old registers is the division of acquisitions into departments. Only the new acquisitions and gifts listed under ‘Collection’ went to the library and were therefore assigned an inventory number. [Volume 1,2 is missing.]
