the outside of the kerbs, two of which form the first pair
of stones on its sides. On the south, it has on its bottom a
projecting fiat stone forming a spout 1| inches beyond the face
line of the kerbs. This spout is about 8 inches lower in level
than the mouth on the north. Fifteen rough, flattish, uneven
freestones are laid so as to roof or cover the watercourse
or runnel of the culvert. They measure usually 18 inches
by 12, up to 22 inches by 15, and are from 4 to 6 inches
thick. There are no signs of any continuation of the runnel of
this culvert either on the north or on the south. Some discussion
of the purpose of this culvert will be found amongst the general
conclusions at the end of this Report. The soil of the vallum
here is clayey and streaked. The layering is not distinct enough
to admit of details of the lines. The ditch having been partly
filled up with coal refuse from a now workecl-out pit, the real
measurement of the ber?n can only be matter of conjecture. It
must, however, have been of nearly the average width, as the total
distance from the north kerb to the top of the counterscarp is
67 feet. The top of the counterscarp is nearly 4 feet below the
level of the top of the north kerb. The outer mound is 42 feet
wide on the top, relatively level; then it makes a very steep
descent to the north, falling 13 feet in 25.
Barr Hill.—Section No. 3.
[Section of vallum only.]
This cutting, 182 feet west of No. 2, is at a point where an
open field-drain has made a gap some feet deeper than the base
of the vallum. The present surface of the remains of the vallum
is 2 feet 7 inches above the base. The kerbs are of freestone,
and the distance between their two face lines is 14 feet. The
bottoming is pretty evenly laid with broken freestone. The soil
is of the same clayey character as in section No. 2, and, like it,
has few stones. The layering is not very distinct here, and
what there is of it appears to be protracted slightly beyond the
kerb to the south. The berm is 26 feet wide, and its extremity
at the edge of the scarp is 2 feet 2 inches lower than the top of
the north kerb. The fosse is 10 feet deep and 40 feet wide.
