The same writer is further responsible for the first fasciculus of a litho-
graphed edition of the Berlin Coptic ostraca.40 This large collection is
similar to those just mentioned. The texts are given according to the
copies of Prof. Erman, Dr. Turaief and the editor.
In an account of his recent stay in Egypt,47 Prof. Strzygowski refers to
the commission formed of Messrs. Herz, Somers Clarke and himself, for
arranging for the adequate preservation and description of the extant
monuments of Christian architecture in Egypt.
In February last Coptic studies lost an eminent contributor by the
death of Cardinal Ciasca, for some years Secretary of the Propaganda,
where he had the control of the famous Borgian collection of MSS.
Thence he had made his admirable edition of the Old Testament fragments,
the preparation of a sequel to which—those of the New Testament—is
said to have occupied him during recent years. The MSS. (Prof. G-uidi
informs me) have been transferred to the Vatican.
