XVIe SIÈCLE. — école italienne. PERSÉE DÉLIVRANT ANDROMÈDE,
PAR BENVENUTO CELLINI.
Cet élégant bas-relief en bronze est disposé à la base du pié-
destal portant la statue du Versée, œuvre capitale de Cellini
qui, avec beaucoup d'autres statues, décore la loge des Lanzi à
Florence. Le cadre saillant du bas-relief est lixé dans le mur
d'appui de la loge, et interrompt la moulure qui règne tout autour
de ce mur. C'est là une preuve de l'admiration que les Floren-
tins ont eue pour Cellini et pour cette oeuvre triple du maître :
le bas-relief, le piédestal et la statue du Versée.
Dans le bas-relief, Andromède est d'une rare élégance; mais
le monstre qui la garde est grotesque pour ne pas dire plus. En
revanche le vieillard du premier plan est d'une grande beauté
sculpturale et d'un caractère admirable.

This élégant bronze bas-relief is placed at the base of tlie
pedestal upon wliich stands the Perseus, the " chef-d'œuvre "
of Cellini wliich with many other statues, ornaments the Loggia
do' Lanzi at Firenze. The frame is inserted in the balustrade
of the Loggia, it projects o\er and breaks the continuity of the
moulding which runs round the balustrade. Jt is a proof of
the admiration the Florentines had for Cellini and for the bas-
relief, the pedestal and the statue of Perseus.
The Andromeda of the bas-relief bas a rare gracefulness, but
the monster is grotesque not to say more. Her father,
Cepbeus, the old man on-the first plan, is avery fine sculptural
figure and full of grandeur.
