This abbatial cross represents unquestionably one of the iînest spécimens
of the French goldsmithery of the latter end of the xn* century. The ampleness
and clearness of the ornamentation, harmony of the onamels, brillancy of the
gems, the filigree and graver's work give to the whole a richness and sump-
tuousness very rare indeed. The more so that the handicraft leaves nothing to
wish for. In fact it is a perfect chef-d'œuvre and the engraving can give but a
very faint idea of Us numerous artistical qualities. The gems eut or uncut are

Cette croix, ou disque crucifère, est incontestablement une dos
1jo11o3 œuvres d'orfèvrerie exécutées vers la fin du xn° siècle.—
L'ampleur et la netteté de l'ornementation, l'harmonie des
émaux, l'éclat des pierres précieuses, les filigranes et la gra-
vure au burin dont quelques parties sont ornées, lui donnent
un caractère de richesse et de somptuosité peu ordinaire. La
main-d'œuvre, d'autre part, ne laisse absolument rien à désirer.
En un mot, dans l'œuvre parfaite que nous montrons, et dont la
gravure ne peut que faiblement reproduire les nombreuses qua-
lités artistiques, les cabochons et pierres précieuses sont de
couleurs variées, les fleurons émaillés des branches et de la
couronne sont bleu clair, sur rouje brun. Il faut insister sur
l'effet que produisent les ornements de grand style, dont le
fond est complètement découpé et ajouré. — Nous ignorons la
provenance de ce riche objet d'art.
