XVI0 SIÈCLE. — orfèvrerie française. COUPE PEDICULEE EN ARGENT DORE,
(AU MUSÉE DU LOUVRE, A PARIS.)
Le sujet représente les forges de Vulcain. — Trois forgerons
nus frappent de toutes leurs forces sur une enclume tandis
qu'un quatrième anime le feu de la forge. — Vénus et l'Amour
semblent contempler cette scène. — Paysage et silhouette de
ville dans le fond.— La figure de Bacchus, une grappe de fruits
à la main et une corbeille sur la tète et disposée en forme de
cariatide,, sert de pied à cette coupe élégante. — Le pied propre-
ment dit est orné de trois médaillons où l'on voit Silène, Nep-
tune et le Temps. — Les ornements du marli sont gravés au
ponctué.

The scène represents Vulcan's forges. — Three nude work-
s:niths are forging an iron bar, while a fourth is keeping up the
furnace fire. — Venus and Cupid are looking at the workmen.—
On the background, a landscape and tlie outlinc of a town. Bac-
chus a caryatid-like figure holding a bunch of grapes with bis
dexter, and wit' liis sinister a basket of fruit upon hishead,
serves as a footto this élégant patera. The base proper is orna-
mented with three medalions, presenting Silenus, Neptune and
Saturnus. The ornaments of the rim are engraved with thfr
puncher.
