may be looked for in the immediate future. Nothing has at present been
made public with regard to their contents.
For the coming year we have also to look forward to the publication of
some of the interesting literary papyri which Berlin has at last acquired,
and it may be hoped that something more will be heard from Strassburg
and Heidelberg. The latest announcement from Berlin is exceptionally
interesting, since it notifies the discovery of the greater part of the Persae
of the dithyrambic poet Timotheus, the pioneer of the emotional and
imitative style in music and poetry.43 The papyrus consists of six columns,
of which the last four, containing the final 200 lines of the ode, are
practically perfect. It is said to be of the fourth century b.c., in which case
it is the earliest Greek MS. extant, and nearly or quite contemporary with
the poet. The publication is in the best possible hands, those of Prof, von
Wilamowitz-Moellendorff. There is also at Berlin a papyrus containing
on one side the scholia of Didymus on some of the Philippics of
Demosthenes, and on the other a hitherto unknown philosophical work
of Hierocles.43 Students of Greek literature have therefore ample
pleasures in anticipation for 1903. Messrs. Grenfell and Hunt's Tebtunis
volume will supply plenty of material to the students of the Ptolemaic
period, while their excavations continue to be so fruitful that we are
assured of further supplies from the same source for many years to come.
The British Museum has acquired a considerable number of non-literary
papyri from various sources, but it is impossible as yet to fix a date
for their publication.

P.S.—Mr. Joseph Offord has kindly called my attention to two recent
publications. One, which I have not myself been able to see, is a prize
essay of the University of Bologna on the subject of the marriages of Roman
soldiers,41 by P. Tassistro, in which use is made of the papyri bearing on
the subject; while the other is a study of the magical papyri by
H. Hubert.45
Mention should also be made of the excellent article on Papyri by
Prof. Deissmann in Cheyne's Encyclopaedia Biblica.
