On a de la peine à s'imaginer, lorsqu'on examine ce petit
meuble d'un travail si prodigieusement compliqué, qu'il est exé-
cuté en fer. On ne peut comprendre que cette matière peu
maniable se soit prêtée avec une telle complaisance au rendu
de formes variées, d'ornements ajourés d'une si grande finesse
et de parties moulurées. Le fer seul pourtant a été employé
dans le charmant coffret que nous présentons et que nous
sommes loin de rendre, il faut l'avouer, dans toutes ses per-
fections.
La iig. 1847 montre le dessus du coffret. Cette face du meuble
est divisée en neuf bandes, contenant des ornements découpés à
jour dans le goût du temps. Pour atteindre à autre chose qu'à
des découpures sans modelé, deux feuilles de tôle sont super-
posées en produisant des épaisseurs et une sorte de modelé
très-ingénieux.
Dans la fig. 1848, on voit l'ensemble du coffret. Sur la face
principale existent deux charnières aux extrémités et l'entrée
de la serrure au milieu. Cette face est divisée en sept parties par
des contre-forts finement travaillés. L'autre face contient une des
poignées destinées à porter le meuble.

Wlien boking at that small pièce of household furniture,
whose workiiigout is so prodigiously complicate, one can hardly
realize the idea of its being executed in iron. H is rallier
incompréhensible howso unmanagcable a material lias lent ilsclf
with so much compliance to the production of the varions forms,
of the flnest open-worked ornaments and of the moulded por-
tions. Yet, iron alone is seen in that nice Mule thing whichwe
show, and, let us confess it, which we are far front reproducing
with the many perfections of the original.
Fig. 1847 shows the upper side of the chest. That part is
divided into nine bands, containing open-worked ornaments in
the style, of the epoch. To produce more that) more cuttings ont
without modelling, two pièces of sheet-iron are superposed,
which give the required thickness and a kind of very ingénions
modelling.
In fig. 1848, the ensemble of tbe coffer is seen. On the main
face, two hinges exist at the extremities, and the entrance of the
lock is in the middle. This side is divided in seven parts by
very finely worked small buttresscs. Tbe other side visible lias
one of the handles by the means of which article is to be carried.
