La forme générale du meuble est exempte de toute recherche
et de toute prétention : elle est évidemment sacrifiée à la commo-
dité de la manœuvre du meuble ; mais aussi quelle profusion de
bon goût dans les détails incrustés, dessinés et modelés avec tant
de perfection. Les onze tiroirs et le panneau central sont ornés
d'arabesques inscrites dans la forme rectangulaire des tiroirs.
On remarque dans cette ornementation qui se dessine en blanc
mat sur un fond relativement foncé des rinceaux, des figures
grotesques, des animaux et des chimères. Le panneau central,
faisant exception, est sans doute une allusion à l'union de
Philippe et de Marie Tudor, et ce sont eux que nous y voyons
debout auprès d'une fontaine dont l'Amour est la décoration
principale. Les armes d'Angleterre existent sur le meuble et sont
estampées d'or. A l'intérieur, les tiroirs sont revêtus de cuir
gravé et doré dans les entailles, se détachant sur un fond bleu
azuré.

The gênerai form of this pièce of household furniture is un-
pretending and unaffected; it has evidently been adopted to make
as convenient as possible the use of the object; yet what tasteful
abundance is to be found in its ornaments inlaid, drawn and
modellcd with so great a perfection ! The eleven drawers and
the central panel are ornated with arabesques enclosed in the
rectangle of each dravver.
In this ornamentation, delineated in dead white on a some-
what dark ground, are seen foliages, grotesque figures, ani-
mais and chimerœ. The central panel, being an exception,
doubtless alludes to the marriage of Philip of Spain and Mary
Tudor, both of whom are seén standing up by a fountain
of which Love is the chief décoration. The arms of England
are stamped in gold on the object. Inside, the drawers are lined
with leather engraved and gilt in the notches on a sky-blue
ground.
