Le Christ, vêtu d'une sorte de jupon, occupe la partie cen-
trale de ce- triptyque qui passe à bon droit pour la plus belle
œuvre byzantine en ivoire qui nous ait été conservée. Le Sau-
veur est crucifié à quatre clous,^t étend horizontalement les
bras comme les Grecs l'ont toujours figuré. A droite et à gaucho
du Christ, les deux grands personnages sont la Vierge et saint
Jean l'apôtre chéri, et les deux petits représentent sainte Hélène
et Constantin. Au sommet, dans la partie cintrée du triptyque,
se voient, près des astres principaux, les archanges Michel et
Gabriel. Les saints sculptés sur les volets sont, en descen-
dant de haut en bas : saint Élie, saint Pierre, le chef des
apôtres, saint Paul, saint Pantaléon, saint Étienne, saint
Nicolas, saint Chrysostôme et enfin saint Corne et saint Damien,
frères et médecins.

Christ vested with a garment in the shape of a petticoat, occu-
pies the central part of tins triptych which is justly considered
as the finest pièce of byzantine sculptured ivory now existing.
The Saviour attached to the cross with four nails, bas his arms
extended horizontally according to the constant tradition of the
Greek Church. On the right and left of Christ, the two large
figures represent the Holy Virgin and S. John , the beloved
Apostle, the smaller, Constantine and Sa Helena. In the center-
ed central crowning of the triptych under the sun and moon
are S. Michael and S. Gabriel. The saints sculptured on the
foldir.g leaves are, in beginning at the top S. S. Eliah, Peter,
the chief of the Apostles, Paul, Pantaleone, Stephen, Nicholas,
Chrysostomus and lastly the brothers S. S. Cosmus and Damian,
both physicians.
