XVIe SIÈCLE. - sculpture française. TROPHÉES. - PORTE D'UN MEURLE
(époque de henri ii.) au cinquième d'exécution.
Ces deux vantaux sculptés proviennent incontestablement
d'un de ces riches cabinets du xvie siècle, si recherchés de nos
jours, et fabriqués en si grand nombre à cette époque. — Celui-
ci devait être d'origine bourguignonne, car nous y retrouvons les
ornements caractéristiques de cette école, l'agencement particu-
lier des trophées, et jusqu'au coup de ciseau des sculpteurs si
exercés et si habiles de ce pays — Les deux figures armées
doivent être Mars et Pellonc.

Tiiese two sculptured panels undoubtedly hilonged to one of the.
richllcabinets"of which the xvithcentury lias left us so many spé-
cimens and which are so much sought after nowadays. Tins cabi-
net must have corne from Burgundy, for thèse panels show the
characteristic ornaments as well as the peculiar arrangement of
trophies belonging to tliat school and show the handling of the
chisel of theclever and highly trained sculptors of that province.
The two armed figures represent piobably Mars and Bellona.
