XVIe SIÈCLE. — école italienne. PEINTURES A FRESQUES. — SAINT VICTOR,
(AU PALAIS DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE A SIENNE.) PAR GIO-ANTONIO BATZZI.
Batzzi, auquel Vasari a infligé injustement le nom de Sodoma,
est né à Verceil en 1477.
Il mourut à Sienne en 1549.
Le saint Victor que nous montrons ci-dessus se voit, en com-
pagnie de saint Ansano et du bienheureux Bernardo Tolomei,
dans la salle délie Ballestre, en face de la grande fresque de
Simon de Marti no, vulgairement Simon Memmi, fresque repsé-
sentant la g'orilication de la Vierge. — Les peintures de Batzzi,
achevées en 1534, lui furent payées vingt-sept ducats d'or. — On
remarquera que non-seulement le personnage principal est traité
de main de maître, mais encore que la niche peinte servant
de fond est admirablement composée et exécutée. — Le mot
Liuerta fait partie de la devise de la ville de Sienne.

The masterly handling of the principal figure is to be notieed
as well as the admirable composition and exécution of the painted
niche of the backgrownd.
The word Libebta is part of the motto of the City of
| Sienna.
