ART JAPONAIS ANCIEN. BRONZE. — PHILOSOPHE MONTÉ SUR UN CE RE

On sait à quelle rare perfection les Japonais ont su atteindre
dans la fonte des bronzes. — Rien ne leur semble impossible, et
les difficultés les plus ardues semblent vaincues par eux sans
effort-;. Le bronze ci-dessus en est un exemple entre mille. tin
pbilosophe, dont le front bosselé et d'une hauteur prodigieuse,
semble recéler toute sagesse et toute vérité, est haché sur un cerf
à longue ramure, broutant une fleur de lotus. Voilà le sujet. Le
cerf est-il animal symbolique au Japon? nous l'ignorons. Mais
ce que nous savons, par exemple, c'est que cerf et philosophe
forment un groupe exquis, d'une exécution qui ne laisse rien a
désirer et d'une originalité de bon goût.

Every one knows the rare perfection the Japanesc have attained
in bronze casting. There are no impossibilités for their founders
who seem to solve with ease the greatestdifficulties. The above
bronze among many others is an examplc of tlieir skiII- A phi-
losopher with a high and bumpy forehead, pouring forth as if it
were, truth and wisdom, sits high upon a long-antlcred stag
browsing a lotus flower. Such is the composition. Is the stag
one of the symboliral animais of Japan? We do not know. But
what we are fully aware of, is that stag and philosopher form
an exquisite group whose exécution is unimpeachable and its
