La partie principale de ce curieux ivoire sculpté est incon-
testablement l'œuvre d'un artiste byzantin ; mais les deux
parties ajoutées, l'une à la base, l'autre au sommet, et où l'on
voit les signes des quatre évangélistes et l'agneau symbolique,
sont-ils de la même mai n et datent-ils de la même époque ? il est
permis d'en douter. Le Christ est assis et bénissant. Le nimbe
est crucifère et décoré d'ornements semblables à ceux que l'on
voit sur le siège ; — l'espèce de ciborium cintré qui abrite le
Sauveur est en partie détruit.

The central part of this sculptured ivory is certainly the
work of a Byzantine artist, but it is very questionable if the
upper and lower parts upon which are figured the symbols of
the Evangelists and the symbolical Lamb belong to the same
artist and epoch. Christ is represented sitting and blessing.
The nimbus is cruciform, and its ornamentation is the same
as that of the throne—the centered ciborium above the Saviour
is partly destroyed.
