C'est aux chapelles absidales de l'église Saint-Jacques de
Dieppe que l'on a recueilli ces exemples de chimères grima-
çantes.

Le sculpteur du XVe siècle s'est visiblement inspiré de la
nature, et l'on y reconnaît souvent les animaux qui lui ont servi
de types dans ses fantaisies variées.

The above grinning ehimarœ belong to the chapels of the
apsis of S. Jacques' church at Dieppe. Thèse sculptures are an
unmistakable proof that the artists of the xvlh century, bor-
rowed their inspiration from nature, as shown by the récogni-
tion in many cases, of the animais which served as types for
their fantastical and varied créations.
