C'était principalement à Damas que vivaient les ouvriers,
véritables artistes, qui nous ont légué un grand nombre de ces
objets en cuivre ciselé et souvent inscrusté. —Dans ces dernières
années, l'empressement qu'ont mis les collectioneurs à acheter,
souvent à des prix énormes, les spécimens de cet art, a donne
naissance à une industrie nouvelle qui n'est qu'une contrefaçon
plus ou moins habile de l'art ancien.

The numerous chiselled and very often inlaid copper articles
whicll bave corne down to us were executed by craftsmen, true
artists, who principally lived at Damascus. — Of latc, thèse
articles have bcen largely bought by tbe amateurs and often at
such high priées, that tbe demar.d bas renovatcd an industry
which is aught else than a more or less successfull forgery of
the ancicut coppersmith' art.
