Les Égyptiens de l'antiquité, on le voit par ces deux repro-
ductions, possédaient à un haut degré le coté imposant de la
sculpture, le côté vraiment décoratif. Le réalisme dont se trouve
empreinte la figure du jeune taureau n'enlève rien à la beauté
et au caractère des lignes, et ce lion couché est un chef-d'œuvre
dans toute l'acception du mot, que le grand artiste Barye a dû
plus d'une fois consulter en même temps qu'il étudiait sur
le vif.

The Egyptians of the earliest times, as prove tho above
drawings, bad a bigb sensé of the imposing character of
sculpture and of its truc décorative effect. The „ rcalism " which
pervades through tlie figure of tho steer, in no way diminishes
the beauty and character of its outline and the couching lion is
a „ chef-d'œuvre " in the full sensé of the word, and Barye, the
great sculptor, whilst studying from nature, must bave often
reflccted over it.
