On voit, en examinant ces curieux des-
sins, que ce n'est pas d'aujourd'hui qu'on
a cherché à réunir dans un chiffre toutes
les lettres figurant dans un nom. Au
moyen âge, non seulement les manuscrits
nous montrent des combinaisons de ce
genre, mais encore on on retrouve souvent
d'identiques sculptées à la façade des
édifices religieux.

ings, one perçoives that long before our
times, efforts had bcen made to combine
ail tho letters of one namo so as to form
a cipher. Not only are examples of the
kind to be found in the mss. of the mi-
ddle âges, but they are also to bo met with
sculptured upon -the fronts of religious 4033
buildings of the epoch.
