The most carcfully and cloverly executed engraving would
always fail to reproduce tlie admirable perfection of tl.ia chi-
selled pièce of bronze work, a true " chef-d'œuvre " which
we owo to Gouthieres. To understand ail tbo talent as well
as the cleverness the artist lias displayed in it, one must see
the original and study it seriously. The article such as it was
executed by the master, the sélection of ils ornamonts, their
arrangement, character and modelling, have, the more, the
advantage of embodying as it wero, to the utmost degree, the
