11 était bien difficile de montrer cette œuvre d'orfèvrerie an-
tique autrement que nous ne l'avons fait, c'est-à-dire légère-
ment en perspective. On se serait alors difficilement rendu
compte de la saillie de la figure centrale léprésçntanf Hercule
enfant, étouffant de chaque c:ain un serpent. La figure bouffie et
"aïve du jeune l.éios lais.se à délirer, peut-être, mais en
revanche le marli de ce plat très concave m< ntre des arabesques
de haut goût, fort habilement eiécutées. — La Pgcre 4404

It was scarcely possible to show this pièce of Roman golds-
mith vvork otherwise thari we have donè, that is to say slightly
in perspective, — as it would have been difficult to account
cxactly fur tbe projection of tbe central figure which repre-
sents Hercules infant smothering two serpents, one in each
hand. The anlcss and bloated face of tue young heroe leaves
to désir.', but on the other hand, the very hollow rim of this
disli is ornamented with arabesques of grand style and most
cleverlj woiked out. Fig. 4404 shows the profile of the article.
