11 n'est guère facile de préciser d'une façon absolue le sujet représenté sur ce beau
médaillon. Cependant, c'est bien une Diane que l'on y voit, ou pour mieux dire une Artémis
arcadienne au milieu de ses nymphes. L'artiste du xvic siècle a-t-il voulu représenter une scène
de repos après la chasse, ou bien l'une des nombreuses versions de la mort d'Orion, puni par la
chaste déesse de sa témérité? Nous l'ignorons. On remarque l'absence de croissant sur le front
de Diane, et on peut en conclure que l'artiste, se piquant d'érudition, n'a pas voulu qu'on

pût confondre son Artémis avec une Séléné. Au point de vue de la plastique, on constate
aisément la belle composition du médaillon et ses grandes qualités d'exécution, l'habileté pro-
digieuse avec laquelle est rendue toute cette végétation compliquée qui sert de fond au sujet
principal.
Ne peut-on conclure de tout cela que le médaillon de M. Sewitz est un repoussé de l'école
do Bonvenuto Cellini, s'il n'est de cet artiste même?

It is not easy to state precisely the scène figured upon this fine medallion. However it is
unquestionably a Diana, or more properly an Arcadian Artémis amidst its nymphs. It is difficult
to say whether the artist of the xvilb century has intented representing a hait after the chase,
or one of the numerous traditions of the death of Orion punished of his tomerity by the chaste
Goddess. We do not know. One must remark that the forehead of the deity is not adorned
with the crescent, and we may conclude that the artist wishing to make show of érudition has
desired that his Artémis should not be taken for a Selene. As regards plastic art, the fine
composition of the medallion, its serious qualities of exécution, the prodigious eleverness shown
in the exécution of the luxuriant végétation serving as a background to the figures, need no
calling forth attention. We may then perhaps conclude that this medallion of M. Sewitz's col-
tion is a « repoussé » executed by one of Benvenuto Cellini's pupils, if not by the master himself.
