LECTURE III.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

IT is true that genius and inclination for a
particular fcicnce, may by labor and affi-
duity, furmount many difficulties; yet to re-
move impediments from the path of knowledge
is a grateful tafk ; and genius will feel and
acknowledge the obligation; for inftru&ion
is ufually moft prized by thofe who are moft
capable of profiting by it.

The arts dependant upon design em-
brace a great variety of fubjecls, and require
an equal variety of precepts j not to perplex
my young adventurers by attention to many at
once, I propofe to treat them feparately .

The art of drawing, as the foundation of all
others claim1- our firft attention. The acknow-
ledged utility of this elegant and ornamental
art greatly enhances its value. Not confined to
painters, engravers, embroiderers, &c. profef-
fions whofeemployment evidently depends upon
it j it is daily pra&ifed by the mathematician,
engineer, navigator, and others.
