to H L completes the figure : or A may be found by its
proper diagonal (being a square) ruled to V, its vanissi-
ing point, as appears by the figure.
Figure 2 is a similar example, and the square e dgs
is found as squares in general: V I being its vanissi-
ing line.
PLATE IX.
No. I. is an application of the foregoing principles
to a natural object, and represents a ssight of flairs in
perspective: C is the center of the horizontal line ; O
is the angle made by the ascent os the flairs ; and gives
V for the -transposed center, to which the inclined lines
are ruled. The measures of the flairs are set on the
ground line, as i 2, and 3 4. The sihadow os the
rail D is found by taking A B as a ray, to which all
shadows that fall on the uprights of the flairs are paral-
lel ; those which fall on the horizontal parts of the flairs
follow their direction, and vanifii in C.
No. II. Is a double cross in perspective: A B C D
is the ground line, on which the thickness of the up-
right is to be marked, as B C ; and the extent of the
cross bar, as C D : these measures are ruled to L (the
center in this example), and by the diagonal D ruled to
H, form a square, which is the plan of the figure. On
C erect a perpendicular to receive the measures sor the
upright, as G F, and E ; from the intersections of the
plan, raise perpendiculars for the upright, as from b c f;
where these are cut by the measures G L, F L, and
E L, rule horizontal lines for the situations of the bars,
whose lengths are determined by perpendiculars from
the plan below : thus 1 2 are governed by a b ; and
3 4» by d e % the figure distinctly describes the whole.
