also the lighter orders apply, and their magni-
ficence is better within our view here too, if
symbols are introduced, a speclator may have
that time to observe their natures and applica-
tions which he would scarce bellow on the
outside of the edifice.
There will always be a diversity of opinions
on the effects of many parts, dpecially the or-
namental parts, of every composition, (other-
wise raste would constantly be alike, and variety
be excluded) yet the primary and leading
ideas of sciences which have been the conslant
study of mankind, are not now to be quitted,
or exchanged. The innumerable occasions and
cireumstances which arise, and which require
particular adaptation, afford ample opportunity
for the exertions of architectural skill ; and
where, by happy contrivance, or foresight, or
by judicious remedy of defedls and impedi-
ments, (from whatever cause arising) an artist
overcomes disficulties, or improves capabilities,
let him have his just praise. Natural genius
is not confined to any spot, or to any people;
and, in my mind, the constructor of Pont-y-prid
bridge, in Wales, though a mere mason, or a
mere country carpenter, may vie, as a man of
genius, with the author of the Rialto.
