LANDSCAPE, Ladies and Gentle-
1 men, is a pare of painting so very exten-
sive and interesting, that it may be said to
include mod other branches of art: It is equally
delightful as deceptive, and by the nature of its
objects, is not only generally agreeable, but
' also generally intelligible. PosTessing unlimited
powers of seleCtion, it is not confined to particu-
lar spots, but by collecting from every quarter,
and by combining beauties from all parts, is
capable of endless variety, and furnishes a per-
petual succeslion of pleasure and satisfaftion.
Landscape has many advantages over historical
painting, in that its subjefts are more familiar
to the speCtator, consequently, are mere im-
mediately understood by him, and, that errors
are less apparent. The want of expresiion, or
proportion, in a head, or a figure, is obvious ;
and not less ofrensive than obvious, because the
forms proper to the part are regular and con-
stant: whereas, the branches of a tree, or the
