kind: the view of the railroads forever keeps summoning the victims of concentration
camps, evoking pain and compassion. The melancholy memory which is alive and
stigmatized by suffering must be one of the pillars of human identity, not just the
German national one. It must be present in the minds of all those who live in the
post-Holocaust world.
Lisa Saltzman used a fitting metaphor when she wrote that Kiefer had been
born under the signs of Saturn and Lilith. Saturn is a symbol of melancholy and the
melancholy memory, while Lilith is a symbol of tragedy - the memory of tragedy is
the essence of Anselm Kiefer’s art.
