little groups of leaves attached at intervals along a wav}'line (the wavy
border mevitioned above, p. 114). A more formal motive of the same kind is
the row of palmettes which we see on XVII. 19-20. Fig. 88 presents a
different combination of similar elements ; the plants or palmettes are here
arranged one above another in the manner of an Egyptian bouquet. The
three leaves on this design are a common feature of Äiycenaean decoration
(e.g., XVII. 17 and XXIV. 10), and are also one of the elements out of which
the stränge flovver known as the lotus-palmette was evolved. The pattern on
XVI. 3 represents a row of bucrania laid on their sides and a bronze jugfrom
Mycenae is decorated with a similar frieze round the Shoulder (Perrot and
Chipiez, p. 9GG, Fig. 554).1 Lastly, there remain to be mentioned the living

anirnals, the Jong-necked bird on XVI. 1, the Aying birds on XVI. 2 and 4, and
an unpublished fragment showing part of a fish. The bird among the jilants
in XVI. 4 is a charming little sketch in the true Mycenaean spirit. With its
round body and single wing it is of the same type as the black and red
birds of the following section (PI. XXI.).
6. Fragments of vases of the same general form as XXV. 1 were not
uncommon. They have usually two rouud-arched handles ; sometimes there
is also a vertical handle at the back, and sometimes we find a basket handle
similar to thatof Fig. 91 (e.g. XVIII. 5). Sometimes they have a fiat-topped
rim ; but more frequently the edge of the opening is piain, as though the top
of the vase had been sliced clean off {e.g. XVIII. 11-12). The spout is usually

- Light-oolonred clay with sniooth, greenish
surface ; matt black paint. (The chests of the
animals ought to be füllet than thej' appear
