been carefully erased.
On last fly-leaf is a. Cautio of John [name erased] dated 1385.

Double columns of 50 lines, with closely written commentary
on margins.
This is, perhaps, the finest book, and one of the largest, in the
library. All the capital letters are well executed in red and
blue. And there are 39 beautifully illuminated miniatures
with rich gilding : delicately ornamented scroll-work, with
faces and figures, often covers the whole page.
“The first picture, with a row of heads and busts at the top,
shows a Pope, with an attendant behind him and five or
six people before him, one of whom has a scroll inscribed :
Lex humana regitur istis duobus. The initial to the text
is also very good : the opening lines of the text here and at
the beginning of each subsequent section are written in
decorative letters with a good deal of ornamental pen work.
Each Causa has a picture. At Causa X is a very large
ornament of dragons in the lower margin. Causa XV shows a
