In order ?nore fully to illujlrate the re-
fpe&ive Arts, we have diligently explained
their very Elements, from whence, as a
Foundatio?t, each of them has been traced
to its prefe?it Pe?feclio?t; gradually advan-
cing fro?n one Rule, or Step, to another
that a?i adequate Idea might be conveyed of
every material Circumjla?ice ; and being
confla?itly follicitous to avoid obfcure Con-
cifenefs on the one Hand, or fatiating Pro-
lixity 07t the other.

We have likewife given a fuccinct. Ac-
count of the Materials employed in each
of the Arts under Confederation, with am-
ple Dire&ions for their particular Appli-
cation ; nor are they o?tly reprefented in
their 7iatural State, but attended through
every Operatio?i preparatory to the Forms
in which they are exhibited in the Shops ;
and Methods are aljo laid down, to diflin-
guifj the pure andge72ui?te from fuch as are
adulterated or factitious.
