There arc fome, who, inftead of roche allum, take the belt
Roman vitriol, or the like.

You may know whether the vitriol be proper for this ufe or
not, by rubbing it on a piece of well policed iron ; if it be, it
will leave a copper colour on it; then this vitriol will make an
Aqua-fortis far more penetrating than the former. See the pu-
rification of this vitriol, under the article VITRIOL.

Aqua Marina, a gem or precious ftone, of a fea-green co-
lour. It is found along the coafts, and is faid to vie with the
amethyfl in hardnefs.

Some critics have contended for its being the llxth ftone in
the rationale of the Jewifh high-prieft ; called, in the Hebrew,
tharfis, which has been rendered in the Latin, beryllus, and by
others, chryfolithus; feveral lapidaries take it for the beryl.

Aqua Mercurii, to make. Take putty, or tin calcined
very fine and pure, one ounce; quickulver purified, two ounces ;
mix them, and make an amalgama : Wafli this with fair wa-
ter till it comes off clear and colourlefs; then dry it perfectly,
put it into a matrafs, with fuch a degree of heat as is neceflary
for fublimation : When it has been fublimed and is grown cold,
take out the fublimate ; to which add an ounce of Venetian cor-
rofive fublimate ; grind them well together on a porphyry, then
put them into another matrafs, clofe it very well, and fink it
all over in a veflel of water ; fo, in a fhort'time, the whole
mafs will be refolved into water: Filtre this into a glafs re-
ceiver, and coagulate on a gentle fand-heatto a cryftalline fub-
ftance ; reduce this in a mortar to a very fine powder, and fearce
it through a fine fieve, put it into a matrafs, flop it well, and
digeft in balneo maria?, to be refolved into water, which keep
for ufe, in making artificial pearls, &c.

Aqua Regalis, 1 is nothing but a common Aqua-fortis,

Aqua Regia, 5 wherein one-fourth of its weight of fal-
armoniac has been difiblved.

But, in order to have a good and ftrong Aqua regalis, ycu
rmift take one pound of Aqua-fortis, prepared as directed, and
put it into a glafs matrafs; and add to it only two ounces of fal-
armoniac, then fet the matrafs into a warm bath, or pan of
warm water, and flir it often, that the fal-armoniac may be
well difiblved in the Aqua-fortis; which will be tinged of a yel-
low colour.

Then you muff, add as much fal-armoniac to it as the Aqua-\
fortis can diflolve, then let it fettle a little, and the fal-armoniac
will leave at the bottom all its earthy parts.

After that decant it gently off into another veflel, fo as not
to difturb the fettling at the bottom, or rather filtre it through
whited-brown paper-
