which she holds with her left hand, striking it with her
right hand. A veil falls from the back of the head down to
the ground, with a lappet passing over each shoulder, and
falling in front down to the hips ; under this is a talaric
chiton, with a broad band down the front, and fine folds
represented by zigzag lines ; over the chiton an upper fold
or diploidion reaching below the hips. The face, right
shoulder, and feet broken away. Height, 5f in. Salzmann,

XXVI. (53) Male figure, with lyre, chelys. The hair is
arranged in formal curls over the forehead, and falls in
long tresses on each side of the neck. He wears a mantle,
which passes obliquely across his body, leaving the right
side and shoulder free; in his right hand he holds the
plectrum ; his left, now worn away, has held the lyre ; the
left foot slightly advanced. Bad condition. Height, 5 in.
XXVII. (54) Male figure, half reclined; his left elbow
on a cushion; in his right, which rests on his knee, he
holds a phiale. The lower part of his body is enveloped in
a mantle ; his hair is long ; the feet lie parallel; the face
is turned to the front. Height, 3 in. by 3-| in.
(55) Similar figure, much defaced, holds drinking horn in
left hand; no phiale in right hand; half the face broken
off. Height, 3£ in. by 3| in.
(56) Similar figure. The left leg drawn under the right
knee, which is raised. Holds a lyre, chelys, in left hand ; no
phiale in the right hand. In a later style. Height, 4^ in.

rests on his bow-case, which has a blue border; in his left
hand a drinking horn, heras, painted blue. He wears the
lion's skin as a headdress; the lion's face covers the top of
his head; its forepaws are knotted on his breast; a gar-
ment of some kind, white, with a red border, falls as low
as the hips; his right hand rests on his right knee, which
is bent; his left knee is bent at right angles to it; he
looks nearly to the front; his face, left arm, and left thigh
coloured red. On his right leg is a buskin painted
white, with a red border. Height, 3^ in. by 4 in.
