the buttocks on the heels. The head is surmounted by the
mouth of the vase; the hair falls in long detached tresses
on the breast, and behind in a thick wavy mass cut off
square between the shoulders. This figure has been
painted red. Height, 6^ in.

(80) Another; similar; the mouth of the vase broken
off. Height, 5|f in.

XLII. (81) Boy crouching, his right leg and thigh
resting on the ground; his left knee, which is bent, sup-
ports his left arm; his right hand rests on his right knee.
He wears a pilos with a brim, and a garment fastened on
the right shoulder. Height, 3|- in. Salzmann, Necropole
de Camiros.

XLIII. (82) Youthful male figure, mounted on a horse,
whose left foreleg is raised. The body of the horse modelled
in the round; his legs raised in relief on a plane set at
right angles to the plinth, in order to support the group;
the tail is shown only in outline, and must have been
further indicated in colour. The body of the rider, from
the left hip upwards, and his right thigh, are broken
away. The horse's mane is hogged. Perhaps this terra-
cotta represents a victor, heles, in a horse-race. The
modelling presents no trace of Archaicism, and the terra-
cotta is probably not earlier than the middle of the fifth
century B.C. Length, 9^-in. by 8.^ in.

XLIV. (83) Upper part of female figure, bearing on
her left shoulder a smaller female figure ; a veil is drawn
round the heads and shoulders of both. This group has
been thought to represent Demeter bringing back Perse-
phone from blades (see Heuzey, Monuments Grrecs, Asso-
ciation des Etudes Grecques, 1873, p. 7). The hair of the
larger figure, is waved over the forehead; the veil, which
covers the remainder of her head and that of the smaller
figure, is drawn forward over the centre of the bosom by
both her hands, on which the hands of the smaller figure
rest. The figures are broken off below the elbows. Pre-
sent height, 4j in.

(84) Fragment of similar group. On the hair of Demeter
traces of red; her neck encircled by a red collar, in the
centre of which is a bulla, painted yellow. Broken off at
the bosom. Present height, 3^ in.

XL.V. (85) Hermes (?), riding on a ram. His hair is
